Abstract
Abstract Nanotechnology is an emerging field and its applications in different sectors of food industry have grown significantly. Nanomaterials are being investigated for their use in food packaging to overcome issues associated with packing materials such as waste generation, toxicity and non-biodegradability. Nanotechnological advancements in food packaging have the potential to improve the mechanical and structural properties of existing materials in terms of maintaining the quality of food, preservation of its freshness. It also helps in monitoring biochemical or microbial changes within packaging and aids in the enhancement of food shelf-life. Nanomaterials in the form of nanofibers, nanoparticles, nanoplates and nanocomposites have been utilised to modify and fabricate the packing materials. The present review focuses on the role and applications of nanotechnology and the latest developments in the food packaging industry with special attention to improved and intelligent packaging. We discussed improved packing which focuses on improving the structural and mechanical properties of the materials namely elasticity, tensile strength, temperature, pH, humidity and gas barrier capacities. Also, this review disserted about intelligent or smart packing which aims to improve the communication aspect of the food packaging material for both the producers and consumers by providing real-time information about the quality and state of the food. This review discussed the various technologies adopted by the food industry and the use of nano-food additives such as colors, flavours, anti-caking and gelating agents in the food industry. Keywords
