Dye-sensitized solar cells are a cost-effective, sustainable option, but require improvements in efficiency, stability, and materials. This study probes using MXenes and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) to boost DSSC performance. MXenes, valued for their high electrical conductivity and layered two-dimensional (2D) structure, and TMDCs, known for their wide optical absorption and adjustable band gaps, are examined for their potential to enhance charge transport and light absorption in DSSCs. It explores how these materials can address key limitations such as charge recombination, limited light harvesting, and poor electrode performance. The recent experimental findings that demonstrate the role of MXenes and TMDCs in promoting rapid electron transport and enhancing the catalytic activity of the counter electrodes have been provided. This review further offers an in-depth analysis of how these components interact within the DSSC framework, emphasizing their effects on efficiency, longevity, and overall performance. By analyzing the material properties, fabrication techniques, and performance enhancements achieved through these nanostructures, this review explores the prospective advancements and applications of 2D layered materials in advancing the field of DSSCs toward higher efficiency and broader practical applications.
